Surayah Akbar is a long-serving member of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), with nearly two decades of committed service to the party and the people. She currently serves on the Central Executive Committee (CEC) and holds the roles of Treasurer and Head of Fundraising. As Treasurer for two terms, she has overseen the party’s financial management with integrity and accountability.
A strong advocate for women’s rights, social equity, and community welfare, Surayah has been at the forefront of the SDP’s efforts to support vulnerable groups. She is known for her advocacy on behalf of single mothers, calling for equal access to government benefits such as maternity leave, childcare leave, and the Child Development Account (CDA). Her stance is guided by empathy and the belief that no child or parent should be left behind.
In 2011, she spoke out against child and women trafficking at an SDP forum and was invited to speak at Slutwalk Singapore, an event focused on ending violence against women and children.
Beyond politics, Surayah is a passionate artist and entrepreneur. Together with her husband, Jufri Salim, who also serves as the party’s Organising Secretary, she co-runs a music publishing and production business. As the lead vocalist of their band, she has released two albums and several singles that have gained airplay across the region, particularly in Indonesia, where the band toured actively from 2012 to 2013.
Surayah is also deeply involved in grassroots charity work, often working behind the scenes to support welfare homes, orphanages, and independent aid movements. Her quiet leadership and dedication to service have earned her the respect of both her supporters and the communities she serves.
In her current campaign, Surayah is focused on tackling the rising cost of living in Singapore — with a strong emphasis on affordable housing and accessible healthcare. Her platform is rooted in compassion, fairness, and a deep commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Singaporeans.
