Dr. Chee Soon Juan is a prominent Singaporean politician, academic, and human rights advocate, serving as the Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) since 1993. With a career spanning over three decades, Dr. Chee has been a steadfast proponent of democratic reform, civil liberties, and social justice in Singapore.
Born on 20 July 1962, Dr. Chee pursued his early education at Anglo-Chinese School before obtaining a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Mansfield University and a PhD in neuropsychology from the University of Georgia in 1990. Upon returning to Singapore, he joined the National University of Singapore as a lecturer in psychology. His academic career was cut short in 1993 following his entry into politics and subsequent dismissal from NUS under controversial circumstances.
Dr. Chee’s political journey began in 1992 when he joined the SDP at the invitation of then-leader Chiam See Tong. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Assistant Secretary-General and later succeeding Chiam as Secretary-General in 1993. Under his leadership, the SDP has emphasised issues such as transparency, accountability, and the protection of civil liberties.
Throughout his political career, Dr. Chee has faced numerous challenges, including legal actions and imprisonment, stemming from his activism and outspoken criticism of the ruling People’s Action Party. Despite these obstacles, he has remained committed to his principles, authoring several books on politics and democracy, including Dare To Change: An Alternative Vision for Singapore and Singapore, My Home Too.
Beyond politics, Dr. Chee is also an entrepreneur and community advocate. In 2021, he and his wife opened Orange & Teal, a café aimed at fostering community engagement and providing a welcoming space for all Singaporeans.
Dr. Chee’s unwavering dedication to democratic ideals and social equity continues to inspire many, as he works towards building a more inclusive and just Singapore.
